Family Sushi Night!

Family Sushi Night is a healthy fun way to bring the family together to create and enjoy sushi. Its so much easier then you think!

Family Sushi Night is a great way to gather around the family table with minimal cooking and create memories. All the preparation is done beforehand to make it easy and enjoyable. All of the ingredients are gluten free. Remember, we eat with our eyes, so lots of colour and variety is the key for the ingredients. I bought the bamboo mat and nori sheets from my local supermarket and always available in your local Asian supermarket. When you are there, you will be tempted to buy more ingredients such as wasabi, kewpie mayo and fried shallots. Its all part of the fun!

Family Sushi Night is also a healthy way to eat and bond with the family. Its as an easy way to feed a crowd and create leftovers for lunch. You can choose any fillings you like – tuna, gluten free schnitzel, salmon, avocado, tofu, prawns. Lets get go! Inspiration for you ….

Ingredients

  • TUNA : I love the tuna in olive oil. Drain. You could opt for a selection of proteins such as poached chicken breast, salmon, tofu, prawns…..
  • NORI SHEETS: Buy at least 2 packets – once they start rolling, they will keep rolling!
  • SUSHI RICE: Its a particular type of rice in the Asian section of the supermarket. Its easy to cook.
  • RICE WINE VINEGAR: Inexpensive and in the Asian aisle of the supermarket
  • TAMARI: The gluten free version of soy sauce
  • CARROTS, CUCUMBER, CAPSICUM: Colour! Colour! Colur!
  • AVOCADO: Delicious and ripe

Instructions

  1. Let’s get cooking! Heat a large pot of water to boil. Follow the instructions on the packet to cook. Then drain. Spread the rice in a large dish and drizzle the tamari/rice wine vinegar with a pinch of salt. Leave to cool
  2. Prep! Prep! Prep! As you can see in the above photo, I love to plate everything. Cook your proteins. Slice them ready to go. Slice your veggies. Dice your avocado. Included your sauces, fresh chilli, baby spinach – whatever you have in the fridge.
  3. Make it special and have a bamboo mat for each person at their place sitting ready to go. The best part about Sushi Night is there is no reheating! Just tuck in and create!

Tips And Tricks

I love making sushi bowls for lunch the next day with all the leftover ingredients.

Is there a technique to rolling the sushi?

Yes, don’t over fill the mixture! The nori sheets will rip and break. Less is more.
